Voyager

Voyager is a NASA mission, with two robotic spacecraft, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. They were launched in 1977 to explore the far edges of our solar system. Both spacecraft were launched to investigate Jupiter and Saturn. Voyager 1 continued towards the farthest edge of the solar system.

Voyager 1 is:

  • the farthest spacecraft from Earth
  • the farthest man-made object from Earth
  • the most distant object in the solar system (whose location is known)

Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft to ever have visited Uranus and Neptune. The Voyager mission has investigated the complex storms of Jupiter, discovered volcanoes on Jupiter's moon Io, studied Saturn's rings, and found 6 new moons of Neptune.

The Voyager mission has been extended to investigate the 'interstellar medium', the space beyond our solar system. They will measure magnetic fields and particles with very high energies. The spacecraft have enough electrical power and fuel to survive until at least 2020.
