ICT Introduction

Liverpool Telescope on site in La Palma

Liverpool Telescope on the
island of La Palma

Robotic telescopes very are efficient at carrying out observations of the night sky, and can work at around twice the speed of an experienced astronomer using a typical professional telescope during an evening's observing.

Robotic instruments make considerable use of ICT in their operation. For example, astronomers can send details of the observations they require to the Telescope Management Centre from anywhere in the world using the internet, and the resulting telescope images ( image data) are sent back to astronomers for review.

Allowing a class to work with this cutting-edge technology allows pupils to experience some exciting and applications of ICT.

In this section you will find many practical activities to help pupils learn more about ICT and its application in real-world situations.
