Image Processing

LT image of the planet Jupiter
Astronomers, for example, examine and analyse image data gathered by modern telescopes using sophisticated image processing software.
Modern astronomical telescopes use special CCD cameras to record observations. The digital data files produced by these cameras can be displayed and analysed using such software.
Learning how to use image processing software demonstrates an exciting and real application of ICT.
The software used by schools registered with the NSO is called LTImage. It was developed by the NSO to provide teachers and students with a dedicated and free tool with which to analyse images taken by the Liverpool Telescope.
For added interest pupils can gather their own image data by requesting the Liverpool Telescope to observe the Moon, a planet or many other interesting astronomical objects.
An important aspect of workshop associated with this activity is that
pupils also learn about astronomy and space as they progress, and this will
be of considerable help to the Science Department.
