NSO Investigation - Planetary Sizes

Measuring the size of planets

Measuring the size of planets

In this investigation we will use the Liverpool Telescope to measure the size (diameter) of a chosen planet.

Planets are found a very long way from the Earth and a powerful telescope is required to make accurate measurements.

To get some idea of the distances involved look in the NSO Astronomy Section at the planet links in the Solar System page.

You can find out facts and figures relating to all the planets.
