Moonsaic 1

Moonsaic - project to assemble a mosaic of the Moon

Surface of the Moon

Liverpool Telescope image of the Moon's surface

This is a keystage 2/3 project to build a large picture of the Moon using a mosaic of lunar observations taken recently by the Liverpool Telescope. The whole picture actually required a mosiac of 64 telescope images. These were later combined and then split into 25 JPEG images that you can print out and reassemble at your leisure. Note that on two of the edges there are small grey patches where we were unable to get suitable obsrvations.

The Task

We will release one image per school day from the beginning of November. This means that in 5 weeks, you could have the whole Moon stuck together and pinned on a noticeboard in you classroom.

To add to the fun, each image will be a random part of the Moon, so you will have to figure out where it's from before you can stick it to any parts of the mosaic you have already - a bit like a jigsaw puzzle. Thankfully, the images overlap a little, so you can make sure you are sticking the right pieces together. Click here for a smaller version of the image to help you identify which bit goes where.

Best of Luck!

Images for Download

As the images become available you can download them in JPEG format from the list below, but remember that they come in no particular order. Also, make sure you use the same method to print out all the images otherwise they may be difficult to fit together.
