Quasar Quest
Quasars are perhaps the most energetic and destructive objects in the Universe.
Blazing out of the centres of distant galaxies, they are thought to be huge Black Holes swallowing up and destroying the stars, dust and gas around them.
However, much is still unclear about them. How big are the black holes? What exactly is being destroyed and how? How does the energy get out? Why are there none near to us?
Your task for this research programme is to study a Quasar to see how it varies in brightness over the course of two or three months. By studying these changes, we may be able to move closer to understanding these amazing objects.
Stage 1. Find out more about Quasars.
Stage 2. Learn how to measure brightness.
Stage 3. Use data from the telescopes to get your results and submit them to us.
Stage 4.
