LT does Research of the Year
We are delighted to announce that research done by astronomers
here at Liverpool John Moores University using the Liverpool Telescope has been chosen as "Research
of the Year" by the Times Higher Education Supplement at their annual
awards.
The research involved building and then using a special instrument
(called RINGO) to study enormous explosions in space called Gamma-Ray
Bursts (or GRBs).

The special
robotic control of the
Telescope was then used to react immediately when a GRB was detected
by special satellite telescopes (like Swift show on the right). It
could then get observations with the new instrument much more quickly
than any other telescope and so see the early stages of the explosion.
This is particularly exciting for us at the NSO as it is all
happening on the same telescope that pupils in registered schools are using for themselves!
