The summit of Mauna Kea (White Mountain), an extinct volcano on the island of Hawaii, is the biggest astronomical observatory in the world. It is home to over a dozen world-class telescopes operated by astronomers from 11 different countries. The telescopes include the twin 10-metre Keck telescopes (USA), the 8-meter Subaru (Japan), the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF), the 3.6-metre Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), the Gemini 8-meter (7 countries), the University of Hawaii 2.2-metre (USA), the 3.8 metre UK Infrared Telescope (UKIRT), the James Clerk Maxwell 15-metre submillimetre telescope (JCMT-UK/Canada/Holland) and the Caltech 10-metre submillimetre telescope (USA).
