The island of La Palma is the fifth largest of the seven main Canary Islands, and has a population of around 85,000 people. The capital, Santa Cruz, is located around 5 miles north of the islands only airport. After departing the airport, we travel through the streets of Santa Cruz and alongside coastal banana plantations, before starting to make our way up the mountain. Ten minutes later we find ourselves winding through tropical forests, but these soon give way to pine forests as we continue to climb.
