Photographic Plates

Examining a plate

Examining a plate by eye

Photographic cameras are probably the simplest astronomical instruments.

They use large glass plates to make very big images with a lot of detail on them.

Although the plates are usually black and white, special coloured filters are used to make measurements of the colours of stars and galaxies.

Nowadays, photographic plates are used less in astronomy as more sensitive electronic CCD cameras are used.
