During the second and third years of my degree in Mathematical Physics at UMIST, I took two astronomy courses. Then, when I was looking at the next step, I realised that the only jobs which would fully use the knowledge I had gained were in the nuclear industry and the defence industry. As I didn't fancy either of those, I looked into studying for a PhD, and astronomy was the most interesting possibility. In the end I did a Master of Science at Jodrell Bank first, and then after I gained my PhD, I took a post-doctoral job at Keele University. So, I haven't been a lifelong fan of astronomy, but rather a late convert.
