Professor of Astrophysics

I was always fascinated by astronomy and space. One of my earliest memories is writing a story about a "man who lived in a shed on Mars(!)". My favourite book in the primary school library was about the solar system. If anything, my enthusiasm for the subject has grown as I have learned more about it. I have had to work hard, and get a good grounding in mathematics and science, but I have been exceptionally well rewarded. I am privileged to be able to work at the frontiers of knowledge, using some of the most sophisticated telescopes, both on the ground and in space. The job itself has allowed me to travel regularly to all parts of the world, meeting people from many different cultures along the way. Indeed, I worked for two years in the United States and made lifelong friends there. Although there is really nothing else I would rather be doing, I know that my scientific training equipped me for many other careers.
